AMH test in Dublin
An AMH test in Dublin at NeoFertility is a private AMH blood test, booked together with a fertility consultation. It costs EUR 80, you do not need a GP referral, and your result is reviewed with a doctor, so you leave knowing what the number means for you as well as the number itself.
We see women every week who were given a single AMH result and not much else. Some were told it was low and that donor eggs or IVF were the realistic options. A number can be useful, but it answers one question, and it helps to know which one before you decide anything.
What the AMH blood test measures
AMH stands for anti-Mullerian hormone. That is a mouthful, but it simply reflects how many small follicles are active in your ovaries at the moment. A follicle is the small fluid-filled sac that grows each month and releases an egg. The test is a simple check of the size of that pool, and doctors call it a marker of ovarian reserve.
Who books an AMH test
We see women who want to know their number before they decide anything. We see women who were given a low result somewhere else and would like it explained. And we see women who are starting a fertility assessment and want AMH as one part of the picture.
What a low or high AMH result can and cannot tell you
A low result means a smaller follicle pool than is typical for a woman's age. That is what it tells you. It does not measure the quality of the follicle, the quality of the egg, or how well you ovulate, and those are separate questions.
For a natural pregnancy, what matters is whether one follicle each cycle grows and ovulates well. A woman with a low AMH can still produce a dominant follicle every cycle. IVF is built around retrieving many eggs at once. A low AMH changes the picture there far more than it does for natural conception.
A high result is read the same way, against your cycle and the rest of your tests and never on its own. If your periods are irregular, AMH is one of several hormone markers we measure. You can read how we approach PCOS/PMOS treatment on its own page.
If your result was low and you are trying to conceive, read our page on low AMH and trying to conceive.
Women ask us whether a low number closes the door. In a sub-group of 26 couples from our 2015 clinic audit, all with a low AMH, the live birth rate was 35%. That is clinic audit data from a small group, not a published trial, and it is not a promise for any one couple. Niamh and David's story shows how it went for one couple who had been told donor eggs were likely.
What happens with your result
At the fertility consultation we go through your result with you. That appointment is 45 minutes with Dr. Boyle or Dr. Toth and costs EUR 300. At NeoFertility we read AMH alongside your fertility chart, the follicle tracking scan and timed blood tests. The useful question for natural conception is what this cycle's follicle is doing. We ask that both partners come where possible, since male factor is part of the picture for many couples with impaired fertility.
AMH is one of the blood tests in our fertility assessment. The others are the Day 3 blood profile (EUR 250) and the 7 DPO blood test (EUR 50 per test). The 7 DPO test looks at oestradiol and progesterone 7 days post ovulation. You can see all of them on our fertility test in Dublin page, and every price on the AMH test cost page.
